When we finally have to say goodbye to our pets, we are faced with not just the heartbreak of losing a family member, but also with the many practical decisions that need to be made at such a difficult time.
Whereas many people choose to have their pets cremated, some may prefer to bury them in their garden. Finding an appropriate receptacle to bury a pet can be daunting in itself, blankets and other synthetic materials often have poor biodegradability properties and can cause environmental concerns.
We have found a company that manufactures sustainable burial containers for pets. We say manufacture, but to be correct – they GROW the receptacle using local mushroom species and upcycled hemp fibers.
The technology was developed at Delft University of Technology during a graduation project. Mycelium, an underground root network of mushrooms is mixed with hemp fibers and made to grow into shapes that when dried, are strong enough to be used as burial receptables.
The fungal structure remains dormant when kept dry, and only begins to grow and break down when it is placed in the soil, coming into contact with ground moisture. Once interred, the casket is absorbed back into the earth within 45 days, actively contributing to the decomposition process and enriching the surrounding soil quality.
