About us

Green Vets is an independent, eco-conscious first opinion veterinary practice in Acomb, York, offering high-quality first opinion companion animal care with a focus on environmental and community responsibility. Staffed by a dedicated team, we emphasize building rapport with clients and providing detailed, empathetic, and transparently priced care.

Our vison is to deliver clinical excellence and genuine care for patients using environmentally and community sustainable principles.

Our mission is to continuously improve clinical standards whilst reducing our negative impact on the environment and make positive contributions to sustainability of the environment and our local community.

Our motto is ‘’Healthy Pets, Happy People’’. It is our foundation.

Our values follow from it, and they describe what drives us. Our core values are part of everything we do. Here they are marked in Green – of course.

Our environmental commitment

We support Vet Sustain’s veterinary sustainability goals. We acknowledge that our veterinary activities, services and operations have an impact on the environment and have identified key impacts related to our business that contribute to our environmental and carbon footprint. Through the implementation of this sustainability policy we will encourage wide reaching participation, working to reduce these impacts, whilst upholding the highest standards of animal health, welfare and clinical care for our patients.

Key Impacts

Even though ‘being Green’ is a constant thread through our business, we too have an impact on the environment. If we want to deliver services to our patients and clients, we need to use electricity, gas and chemicals. Without that, we would simply not be able to look after the animals under our care.

Currently, only UK quoted companies and large business must disclose their annual energy use and greenhouse gas emissions and related information. There is no such requirement for small businesses. However, we have always recognised the need for early voluntary action, and through that inspire other businesses to do the same.

We have used Vet Sustain to calculate our practice carbon footprint, and we can report that our April 2025 – April 2026 emissions are 13.78 Tons CO2 equivalent. Click here to see the full report.

• Targets

We Green Vets pledge to:

• Reduce our environmental impact through a journey of continual improvement and reduce our carbon emissions by 10% in the next 2 years. Installing energy efficient Inverter Heat Pumps have already enable us to remove gas-boiler driven radiators in three rooms, and we will continue to optimise the use of these Inverter Heat Pumps by automating heating and cooling schedules and educating staff on efficient ambient temperature settings.
• Achieve a Sustainability Award through our commitment to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Practice Standards Accreditation Scheme
• Reduce our waste output though our ongoing commitment to recycling:
  • re-cycle empty and unused toner cartridge
  • further our commitment to becoming paper-free practice
  • recycle and compost cardboard
• Reduce our waste output by
  • using reusable items over single use disposables
  • efficient stock control, reducing delivery frequencies.

• Reduce staff commuting related emissions through incentivising EV use though salary sacrifice schemes

• Become carbon neutral by offsetting our remaining emissions by the end of 2028.
