We completed an extension to the original practice in April 2025, and chose to use the data of the following 12 month to calculate our new carbon footprint, rather than wait for the calendar year to end. The extension has all but doubled our clinical space, and we were naturally anxious that this would have a big negative impact on our emissions.

We did indeed see a 30% increase in our electricity usage, as well as a 34% increase in the amount of anaesthetic agents we use compared to the 2023 data.

However, one of the decisions we made in planning the extension was to have Inverter Heat Pumps installed in all the new rooms rather than traditional gas-boiler driven central heating. We also removed the existing radiators from both our consult rooms and the laboratory. This decision has resulted in a 45% reduction of our natural gas usage.

This is an important achievement, as all our electricity is 100% renewable, but the gas used for heating is not.

This, together with other changes we made, such as sending all of our domestic waste for Energy From Waste (EFW) incineration, and installing a water meter, has effectively reduced our emissions by 15%. Needless to say, we are super proud!
